Who We Are

We are the Madison, Wisconsin, local action group of the international organization 350.org. Started by Madison area climate activists in January 2012, we plan and participate in local, national, and international actions to raise awareness of the pressing need to address climate change.  We are helping build a global movement that is creating the political will necessary to pass international climate legislation that will effectively return our planet to a stable climate.  We help unite the message of many groups that are working for a livable climate into one specific goal:  we need to get below 350 ppm.

Our Mission

The 350 Madison Climate Action Team is dedicated to achieving a reduction in atmospheric CO2 below 350 parts per million (ppm). We are working in concert with a powerful global movement that seeks to make a just transition to a world fueled by 100% renewable energy.

Our Successes

Since its inception in 2012, 350 Madison has established an amazing activism track record including sponsorship of Bill McKibben’s Do The Math Tour, participation in several 350.org Global Days of Action, the 2014 People’s Climate March, Global Divestment Day, and many other local protests, rallies and actions.

Our campaigns for fossil fuel divestment and against tar sands pipeline expansion have led to remarkable successes. 350 Madison has helped convince the City of Madison and Dane County to create their own divestment plans. We have also fought hard to delay tar sands pipeline expansion by lobbying the Dane County Zoning Committee, convincing them to require millions in clean-up insurance of the pipeline giant, Enbridge.

What’s next for this remarkable group of dedicated citizen activists? We’ll keep the pressure on Enbridge as it seeks to further expand tar sands exports through Wisconsin and work with UW–Madison student groups to convince the university to divest its holdings from fossil fuel securities. And we’ll continue growing our climate activist community, finding ways for new members to plug in and utilize their unique skills in the fight to maintain a livable planet for future generations.

Why 350?

350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere.

Accelerating arctic warming and other early climate impacts have led scientists to conclude that we are already above the safe zone at our current 400 ppm, and that unless we are able to rapidly return to below 350 ppm this century, we risk reaching tipping points and irreversible impacts such as the melting of the Greenland ice sheet and major methane releases from increased permafrost melt.

Tar Sands Campaign

Stop Tar Sands Expansion in Wisconsin! Most people have heard of the Keystone XL pipeline and the threat it would have posed to the climate and the environment. Much less well known is the fact that the world’s largest pipeline carries toxic tar sands oil right through Wisconsin, including Dane County. 350 Madison invites you to join the fight against tar sands expansion in Wisconsin!

Divestment Campaign

The 350 Madison Divestment Campaign is part of an international movement pressing universities and colleges (including UW–Madison), local governments, religious organizations, other institutions to sell off fossil fuel assets and invest in cleaner alternatives. If it's wrong to wreck the planet, then it's wrong to profit from that wreckage! Join us—sign our petition urging UW to divest!

Local Energy Action

The Local Energy Action Team works to move the Madison area off fossil fuels by reducing energy use and moving to 100% renewable energy. The team pushes MGE to get off coal and other fossil fuels, supports 100% clean energy for our communities. promotes clean transit options that serve everyone, helps 350 Madison members reduce their carbon footprint, and advocates for energy equity.
